Harvey Pekar's view of Israel was disgusting

This page comes from the late graphic novelist Harvey Pekar's last junkpile, Not the Israel my Parents Promised me, which has been released 2 years after his death, and is something he did in co-op with J.T. Waldman. There's more pages here. It's basically an attack on [right-wing/Zionist] Israelis of today as "ignorant", and even attacks Ariel Sharon for all the wrong reasons. That page at Imprint interviews Waldman, who says:
Do you anticipate any controversy?

I actually think the book won't be too controversial for today's readers. After [Peter] Beinart and so many other eloquent and bombastic arguments for a political change of course, I don't think Harvey's message is as drastic and controversial as it once was.

I think the general American Jewish public aligns with most of the opinions found in this book. Whether they can admit that publicly is another thing. I just hope that the book generates conversation and gets people talking again. If controversy stokes that dialogue, then bring it on!
I think what's offensive about people like Waldman is how they enjoy getting on the nerves of those they disagree with and actually want to get them angry instead of happy. Why want people to discuss your book for the wrong reasons? What if it actually got you considered persona non grata when you didn't ask for it, and just 15 minutes of infamy? Which I hope will be the case with Waldman, though whether the American Jewish public will see this as fully legitimate does still remain in question.

Here's more from the Jewish Journal:
Waldman capped off his lecture with video of himself kibitzing with the characteristically grumpy “American Splendor” creator, pestering Pekar about the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.

“What you do is you stay out of there,” Pekar grumbled. “You don’t go populate it with thousands of people,” opining that occupation was not good for the Jews. “Even [Prime Minister Ariel] Sharon realized it.”
What this tell is that he supported the "disengagement" full force, regardless of its leading to rocket attacks by the Hamas more easily, and believes that there was actually an Arab/Islamic country called "palestine", and doesn't believe that the Romans coined the name. And most galling about people of Pekar's standing is how they're never concerned with the Islamic mindset, and probably doesn't care about Muhammed's marrying a 9-year-old girl either. Sure, he does mention that the Arab countries in 1948 rejected the partition plan of the UN, but if this is how he's going to go for the most part, then if he's allegedly making a point about that, he deep-sixes it.

And Pekar even goes so far to make the following statement in the book:
Blech. That's absolute gall to call our history "mythology". By contrast, in light of the recent discussion on whether Muhammed actually existed, it figures if he didn't wonder why Muslims believe theirs.

Here's an extra Jewish Journal review that says:
Pekar may not believe in God and Torah, but he definitely shares the Jewish habit of mind that allows many of us to see both sides of every question. “The Arabs have a legitimate beef,” he insists. “Ben-Gurion admitted it. Dayan admitted it. Sure, the Jews tell everyone that God provided them the land because they are his people. But every ethnic group thinks they are his chosen people.”
I guess that means he also supports imposition of Sharia law. I don't think Ben-Gurion ever said such a thing, though Dayan certainly did something to show that he believes Muslims have every right to the Temple Mount. What Pekar didn't consider is that Islam may believe in God, but not in what the Lord really wants, which is leading a non-violent, non-criminal, and responsible life. That's where the Religion of Rape is backwards compared to Judeo-Christianity. I also find it shameful how this kind of propaganda is put in the same league as other Jewish comics contributors from earlier times, especially considering that Will Eisner's last graphic novel, The Plot, has some mention of the Muslim world's anti-semitism.

Predictably, this last work of Pekar's is just what some sites about comics consider worth citing, including the British-based Bleeding Cool, and even Comic Book Resources. They very rarely ever suggest taking a look at something involving a pro-Israel book, if at all. All it's done in the end is tell that Pekar was a very disgraceful man, the kind whom I'm wondering has a tunnelvisioned view of Hasidics per the 1948 Oliver Twist movie, and doesn't make any distinctions between say, Lubavich and Neturei Karta sects. In other words, I wouldn't be surprised if he were the kind of man who thinks Hasidics are a problem but never Muslims. For now, I do know that his co-author Waldman is a disgrace for assisting him in cobbling together this galling screed against Israel.

With a week to ruminate..here is the Obama Campaign Strategy, in a nutshell .. I SUCK, HE’S WORSE

Given not just the lies, but the damned lies over Bain, which are working, I have to say that Romney’s apparent rope a dope strategy is actually terrifying to those who wish Obama a happy life as the first ex president community organizer for ACORN and SEIU.
This is not about an election.
This is not about R vs D.
1 ) Even Robert Reich is upset, pointing out that with 125,000 new jobs per month in the private sector equalling no change in unemployment, we are losing ground every month, with 84,000 new jobs per month being created.
This is not just about jobs, though certainly not having a job tends to concentrate your attention on that.
2) More people are becoming disabled, CLEARLY out of economic desperation than find jobs.
More workers joined the federal government’s disability program in June than got new jobs, according to two new government reports, a clear indicator of how bleak the nation’s jobs picture is after three full years of economic recovery.
The economy created just 80,000 jobs in June, the Bureau of Labor Statistics reported Friday. But that same month, 85,000 workers left the workforce entirely to enroll in the Social Security Disability Insurance program, according to the Social Security Administration.
The disability ranks have outpaced job growth throughout President Obama’s recovery. While the economy has created 2.6 million jobs since June 2009, fully 3.1 million workers signed up for disability benefits.
In other words, the number of new disability enrollees has climbed 19% faster than the number of jobs created during the sluggish recovery. (Even after accounting for people who left the disability program because they died or aged into retirement, disability ranks have climbed more than 1.1 million in the past three years.)
But it’s not just about the gestalt of erosion self reliance abetted by this govt as easier than DOING THE REAL WORK OF CLEARING THE WAY FOR THE JOBS MACHINE TO BE REBORN
3) In the past few days Homeland Security has established criteria for terrorism profiling which would have put EVERY SINGE PERSON who helped and signed on 7/4/1776, and every singly person who contributed to and ratified the first ten amendments, at the very least, under federal scrutiny, spying, and worse.
What criteria?
Are you “reverent of individual liberty?“ Are you ”suspicious of centralized federal authority?“ Do you think there is a ”grave threat to national sovereignty and/or personal liberty?”
Well, then you fall into the category of “extreme right-wing” terrorist, according to a new study out of the University of Maryland, which was funded in part by the Department of Homeland Security.
But it’s not just about the federal govt PERCEIVING anyone who regards their NORMAL HUMAN REACH FOR MORE AND MORE POWER as being BAD FOR INDIVIDUAL FREEDOM..
4) For the second time in as many weeks, the Russians have penetrated US Air Defense Zones, in the immediate launch areas of our anti missile interceptor bases, following .. well…
In May, Russian Gen. Nikolai Makarov, the chief of the Russian General Staff, said during a Moscow conference that because missile defense systems are destabilizing, “A decision on pre-emptive use of the attack weapons available will be made when the situation worsens.” The comments highlighted Russian opposition to planned deployments of U.S. missile defense interceptors and sensors in Europe.
What does this mean?
The ancient but effective TU-95MS bomber with 16 KH-55 missiles each with range of ~1,875 miles is practicing pre emptive strike on our weapons WHOSE SOLE UTILITY is to destroy ICBM’s already in the air and about to strike us.
This man, Obama, across the board has worsened the individual ability of Americans to have a job, maintain individual reliance, operate in independence of federal authority in their day to day lives and OPINIONS, and degraded national security …and I haven’t even mentioned Obama’s plan to ruin deterrence, the only thing which has prevented world war across 60 years, by taking our nuclear arsenal down to 600 weapons, or his unbeleeeeevably impractical gaian ideology with regard to what makes everything either MORE or less expensive, ENERGY.

Romney, get off the ropes. People will form their image emotionally, NOT LOGICALLY and that view will not be changed by facts.

Another Tax Puts Another Business Out Of Business

Today Uncle Barry will likely sign a Federal Transportation bill.

In true D.C. fashion, Max Baucus (among others) snuck a tax amendment in there.

The tax will effectively put hundreds of small mom and pop shops out of business and cost thousands of employees their jobs.

So tell me dear politicians. . .

If you expected this tax to raise money for whatever project you claim it's for. . .

but what it does is put a lot of people out of work in a bad economy this close to election. . .

and a lot of small businesses out of business in a bad economy this close to election. . .

and you therefore can't collect that tax from a business out of business. . .

then what good did it do you?

Roll-your-own cigarette operations to be snuffed out

A tiny amendment buried in the federal transportation bill to be signed today by President Barack Obama will put operators of roll-your-own cigarette operations in Las Vegas and nationwide out of business at midnight.

Robert Weissen, with his brothers and other partners, own nine Sin City Cigarette Factory locations in Southern Nevada, including six in Las Vegas, and one in Hawaii. He said when the bill is signed their only choice is to turn off their 20 RYO Filling Station machines and lay off more than 40 employees.

"We'll stay open for about another week to sell tubes and tobacco just to get through our inventory, but without the use of the RYO machines, we won't be staying open," he said.

The machines are used by customers who buy loose tobacco and paper tubes from the shop and then turn out a carton of finished cigarettes in as little as 10 minutes, often varying the blend to suit their taste. Savings are substantial - at $23 per carton, half the cost of a name-brand smoke - in part because loose tobacco is taxed at a lower rate.

"These cigarettes are different because there are benefits in saving money and in how they make you feel," said Amy Hinds, a partner who operates the Sin City Cigarette Factory at Craig and Decatur.

"These cigarettes don't have any of the chemicals in them, and the papers are chemical-free, unlike the cartons people buy from Philip Morris."

But a few paragraphs added to the transportation bill changed the definition of a cigarette manufacturer to cover thousands of roll-your-own operations nationwide. The move, backed by major tobacco companies, is aimed at boosting tax revenues.

Faced with regulation costs that could run to hundreds of thousands of dollars, RYO machine owners nationwide are shutting down more than 1,000 of the $36,000 machines.

"I feel it's kind of shaky,'' Wiessen said. "The man who pushed for this bill is Sen. (Max) Baucus from Montana, and he received donations from Altria, a parent company of Philip Morris. Interestingly enough, there are also no RYO machines in the state of Montana. It really makes me question the morals and values of our elected speakers."

Sierra Bawden, a single mom with two kids who started rolling her own smokes at Hind's shop three months ago, said cost is only one factor.

"It saves me time and money, and in the end I feel better because I don't get all of the chemicals that the other cigarettes have," Bawden said. "With the brand-name cigarettes, we pay for the chemicals and the name, and I don't want any of that, so I don't even know what I'll do when the shop closes down."

In Southern Nevada, there are two basic RYO business models: traditional smoke shops that also sell brand-name cigarettes, hookah and smoking paraphernalia, and RYO lounges that sell only loose tobacco and materials.

"Our stores are like lounges where our customers can buy the pieces for the product then roll them by hand or use the machine to make their cigarettes," Wiessen said. "It's a relaxed environment. Rolling a carton of cigarettes by hand can take one person up to three hours."

Even before the bill is signed, Hinds' location on Craig Road was already feeling the pinch. They were to close Thursday because suppliers stopped delivering needed materials last week.

Wiessen and others are attempting to mount a petition drive asking for relief from the new regulations and are talking to lawyers now to explore their options.

"As it stands right now, we'll have no choice but to shut down at midnight on Friday, but we're not giving up," Wiessen said. "We have to see what our lawyers tell us and go from there."

80,000 Jobs And Of Those 25,000 were Temp Work

34 Months now. That's how long I've been out here trying to find work.

13 months is how long I have no longer been counted as unemployed. That's when the unemployment ran out. Since then we've been surviving on just my wife's salary, which is just above (by less than 2 grand) the poverty level. So even if I wanted to I wouldn't get food stamps or free lunches for the kid or a spot in the local food pantry line. I don't want to, of course, because my father's and grandfather's pride runs deep in me and runs very deep.

Stubborn is what my daughters call it.

The two oldest daughters have been a major help. Buying the groceries (the one who still lives at home) or paying some of the utilities (the Alaskan).

The fourteen year old worries all the time but she won't tell me about it. Tells her mom, though. Tries to give her her birthday money to help out.

I've been told I was too high on the food chain for that job. I've been told this job won't be challenging enough for me.

I've largely stopped answering the house phone (potential employers have the cell phone number), or take it off the hook altogether, because of the incessant calls from creditors I can n longer pay. Dozens of attempts a day from them if I don't answer.

But I don't answer because the story is always the same. I have to explain yet again that yes, I know I had this credit card for 30 years with stellar credit but now all my money is gone and I can't pay you right now.

I've been told I made too much money on unemployment to qualify for a mortgage modification.

I've been told to hang in there. I've been told something will come along. I've been told your ship will come in.

And I'm telling you that no one out here this long wants to hear that. It means nothing. It's a platitude people think will cheer you up. Give you hope.

Maybe at the 3 or 4 month mark, but at 34 months?

One of the bitterest blows came about a month ago. I had an interview with someone who knew me, who worked with me years ago on a big project. And we worked well together. In fact they wouldn't have gotten that project without my input.

I should have been a lock for the job. Had nearly everything they wanted. Interview went well.

I got a thanks but no thanks. And phone calls to them now are un-returned.

But I keep looking, even though any hope my situation will improve left long ago.

It's infuriating to listen to the wonks and talking heads discuss what this means for the President's re-election effort. How about what this means to 25 or 30 million Americans? To America herself?


June Job Creation at 80,000; Rate Holds Steady at 8.2%

The U.S. economy created just 80,000 jobs in June and the unemployment rate held steady at 8.2 percent, reflecting continued slow growth in the economy with the presidential election just four months away.

The Bureau of Labor Statistics said private payrolls increased 84,000, while the government lost 4,000 jobs. Economists expected job growth of about 100,000 and the unemployment rate to be unchanged, though many had increased their forecasts based on some recent indicators.

With yet another month of weak employment growth, the second quarter marks the worst three-month period in two years. The period averaged just 75,000 per month, against 226,000 in the first quarter, which benefited from an unusually mild winter.

May's weak initial 69,000 report was revised upward to 77,000, which made the June growth essentially the same. The April number was revised lower, from 77,000 to 68,000. . .

. . .A measure of unemployment that includes discouraged workers ticked higher to 14.9 percent, its highest level since February, while the labor force participation rate stayed near a 30-year low at 63.8 percent.

Unemployment for blacks surged to 14.4 percent — the highest level of 2012 and up from 13.6 percent in May — while the 11.0 percent rate for Latinos was unchanged over May but also at a high for the year.

Long-term unemployment, or those without jobs for 27 or more weeks, edged lower to 5.37 million, though the average duration of joblessness rose to 39.9 weeks, the highest since February. . .


One-Third of June Jobs in Temp Agencies

The June Jobs Report was dismal enough. The top-line job growth number missed even the low end of expectations and the overall unemployment remained unchanged. But, tucked away in the report was a more ominous sign. Almost one-third of the jobs that were created were at temporary employment firms.

BLS reported that Business and Professional Services created 47k jobs in June, almost 6-in-10 of the total jobs created. Over half of these, though, 25k, were at temporary employment firms. This means that almost one-third of the jobs created were are temp agencies, a clear sign that employers remain hesitant about expanding their payrolls.

This isn't a knock on temp agencies. They provide an invaluable service, allowing companies to be flexible and quickly adapt to changing markets. But, the sharp growth in their business suggest that businesses will explore every option before committing to additional hiring.

Analysts underestimate the incredible drag fiscal and regulatory uncertainty has on business and its hiring decisions. Anecdotally, I know of many businessman who would like to hire, but have no way to calculate what their future obligations will be. Hiring will not start again until this uncertainty is cleared up.

November, hopefully, will provide such clarity.

Nation Of Wusses

So, on July 4, Mr. AOW and I went to the local VFW for the annual Independence Day barbecue.

Rarely do we discuss politics there.  Mr. AOW, however, said something about recently attending a Romney rally here in Northern Virginia because he wanted to tell the guys about one of the anti-Obama buttons we got at the rally; that button has a drawing of Obama on it and reads "Does this ass make my butt look bigger?"  I've been on a diet (almost done now) and just had to have that button.

One of the other VFW patrons (might not have been a veteran but should have some kind of connection to the military and about 30 years old) piped up and said, "Romney scares me."

Whisky Tango Foxtrot!

I kept quiet, but my brain shouted to itself:

"Romney SCARES you?  Are you kidding me?  OBAMA doesn't scare you?"

We're a nation of wusses. I'm convinced of it. And what happened at our local VFW a few days ago serves to reinforce my theory.

Michael Freund on the anti-semitism at the Temple Mount

Michael Freund at the Jerusalem Post has written about the disturbing silence on the Israeli police's appeasement of the Muslim Wakf at the Temple Mount:
In recent weeks, there have been a string of incidents that should have sparked outrage across the Jewish world but instead were met with stony silence.

On a number of occasions, Jews seeking to exercise their basic human rights such as freedom of worship and assembly, and freedom of speech, have seen their liberties callously disregarded, and even trampled upon.

Those wishing to pray have been hushed and even threatened with arrest, while others have been asked to remove their yarmulkes while in public.

Needless to say, these detestable acts of anti-Semitism elicited neither a single press release nor even a peep of public protest from world Jewish leaders or organizations.

Had they occurred in Paris, London or New York, the guardian lions of civil rights would surely have made their roars heard. But since these affronts against Jews have all taken place on the Temple Mount, in the heart of Jerusalem, the raucous lions have instead turned into silent lambs, refusing even to bleat in disapproval.

Consider the following. According to a report in Ma’ariv (May 22), the Israeli police have issued new instructions which forbid Jews on the Temple Mount from rocking back and forth, moving their lips or even closing their eyes, as these all might be construed as acts of prayer.

Under pressure from the Muslim Wakf which administers the site, Israel’s finest also warned Jewish visitors against removing a note of paper from one’s pocket and reading it, ostensibly out of fear that the offending page might contain Biblical verses or words of entreaty to Heaven.

Don’t let the absurdity of these regulations detract from their seriousness: this is a shocking and extreme violation of every person’s fundamental freedoms. [...]

The root of the problem lies in the humiliating arrangements that exist on the Mount, where the extremist Muslim Wakf is allowed a large measure of control. In addition to doing their utmost to erase any trace of Israel’s historical heritage at the site, the Wakf has also regularly harassed Jewish pilgrims who, despite all the restrictions, continue to visit the Mount.

Ten days ago, a young British Jewish student was reportedly accosted by Wakf officials, who demanded that he remove his yarmulke, which they said they found to be “offensive.” Rather than get into an altercation, the student chose to leave, later telling reporters that, “I have experienced anti-Semitism in England, but I never thought that in Judaism’s holiest site I would be subjugated to such discrimination.”

He is right – and no one else should be subjected to it either.
Nor should anybody remain silent on the matter anymore. If anti-semitism is not acceptable abroad, then it's not acceptable at home either, and any person who considers themselves pro-Israel, whether a reporter or a blogger or a diplomat, no matter what their race or nationality, who fails to speak out about this is putting their credentials in jeopardy. Just because they presumably don't want to appear critical of the Netanyahu led government, that's why they can't say anything? I find that offensive that anybody would think it's wrong to be critical of a right-wing Israeli leader for any reason whatsoever, and it's going to have to change sooner or later.

Government-Subsidized Canadian Rap Artist Releases Song Glorifying The Taliban

Rogell.A popular French-speaking rapper from Montreal has released a new pro-terrorism song showing a Taliban point of view of the war in Afghanistan.Canada's National Post reports. Although Manu Militarimaintains that the shocking video for "L'Attente," or "The Wait," doesn't promote terror, Canadian officials are outraged that the artist may have received more than $100,000 in government money to build his career.

The "L'Attente" video shows Taliban terrorists taking revenge for a fictional Canadian/Afghan anti-terror operation where Afghan soldiers torture a local civilian. The song contains lyrics such as "I wait for him" and "I hurry to dig a hole to put in my fertilizer bomb" while showing footage of a roadside bombing of Canadian troops and Taliban fighters gunning down survivors

"I want to free my land … This is not about religion," Manu Militari sings, while Taliban fighters are portrayed as family men.

The rapper was heavily subsidized by Canadian nonprofit MusicAction, which claims as its mission "to encourage the development of music by financially supporting the production and marketing" of acts by French Canadian artists. MusicAction is a federally funded Canadian government entity, with support coming from the Ministry of Canadian Heritage.

"The content of this song is offensive," said Sébastien Gariépy, the Minister of Canadian Heritage's Press Secretary. "To glorify the Taliban and their terrorism is indefensible and wrong. MusicAction's contribution to this group does not meet the conditions of government of Canada funding. Appropriate measures will be taken in response."

Egypt's Pres Mursi to Visit Iran - "Iran-Egypt relations are expected to witness an eye-catching growth in coming weeks"

Lebanese daily, al-Saffir, said the Egyptian president is due to pay an official visit to Iran in August to discuss bilateral ties and cooperation and attend a summit meeting of the Non-Aligned Movement (NAM). 
Egypt currently holds presidency of the NAM and Mursi will deliver his chair to Iran in the August meeting in Tehran as Iran is due to chair the movement for the next three years.  
"The Iran-Egypt relations are expected to witness an eye-catching growth in coming weeks," the daily said. In an interview with FNA late last month, Mursi underlined his enthusiasm for the further expansion of ties with Iran, and said resumption of formal relations between Tehran and Cairo would create a strategic balance in the region.  
"The issue will create a strategic balance in the region," Mursi told FNA on Sunday, hours before the final results of the presidential election was announced.  
Mursi stressed his eagerness to further develop ties with Iran, and said, "It is part of my agenda (as the first post-Mubarak president of Egypt)."  
Ever since the collapse of Hosni Mubarak's regime, the Iranian and Egyptian officials have voiced their interest in the resumption of diplomatic relations between the two countries.  
Iranian Foreign Minister Ali Akbar Salehi and his former Egyptian counterpart Nabil Al-Arabi in a meeting in Bali, Indonesia, which took place on the sidelines of a NAM ministerial meeting, conferred on ways to promote the bilateral relations between Tehran and Cairo, and stressed the need for continued consultations in this regard.

This time, the president's flubs and his campaign's crassness matter

President Barack Obama’s gaffes, tone-deaf statements, and inadvertent betrayals of his elitist true beliefs now arrive with such frequency that they leave one wondering if he’s deliberately trying to lose — until one recalls that he was the same way four years ago.
By May 2008, Michelle Malkin already had a mountain of evidence, which she acknowledged was only a sample, that when away from his teleprompter, this alleged super-smarty is in reality a walking, talking “perpetual gaffe machine.” Her itemization included his reference to the country’s “57 states” and his description of Arkansas as being “in the middle”of Kentucky and Obama’s home state of Illinois. Later in that year’s campaign, we were treated to a stumbling, bumbling candidate describing asthmatics as needing “breathalyzers” and “inhalators” and having the country’s energy problems solved if only drivers would properly inflate their tires.
Tin-eared statements which would certainly have kept any Republican or conservative and almost any other Democrat from winning the presidency included but certainly weren’t limited to how he would want to handle a daughter’sunplanned pregnancy (“if they make a mistake, I don’t want them punished with a baby”), gun control (“even if I want to take them away, I don’t have the votes in Congress”), and energy policy (“if somebody wants to build a coal-powered plant, they can. It’s just that it will bankrupt them”). Just a few of the betrayals of his true beliefs and insufferable elitism included stubborn support of his fiercely racist pastor of nearly two decades until it became obviously untenable, his characterization of rural Pennsylvanians and Midwesterners as “cling(ing) to guns or religion or antipathy to people who aren’t like them,” and of course his “spread the wealth around” statement to Joe the Plumber.

None of this prevented Obama from winning the presidency four years ago, for four reasons. First, his opponent was so determined to play nice that he squandered repeated opportunities to pounce. Second, a determined lapdog press covered up, downplayed, and excused the candidate’s every move. Third, much of the country was completely convinced that the recession was entirely the fault of George W. Bush and Republicans. (I have previously demonstrated that the recession really owed its severity if not its very existence to Democratic Party-driven housing policies, hundreds of billions of dollars of mortgage-backed securities fraud at “government-sponsored enterprises” run by Democrat cronies, and relentless 2008 campaign threats by Democrats from Obama on down of severe tax increases and environmental tyranny upon their triumph.) Finally, the Obama campaign ran a deliberately non-specific, false biography-inspired campaign of hope, change, and hero worship while conducting an under-the-radar and arguably criminalcampaign contributions enterprise which brought in untold millions in untraceable money, much of it likely from foreign sources.

Egyptian President Mohammed Morsi To Meet With Hamas

GAZA CITY, Gaza Strip (AP) — A Palestinian official said Gaza’s prime minister will head to Cairo within the next two weeks to meet with Egypt’s new Islamist president, who has close ties with the territory’s Hamas rulers. 
Cabinet secretary Mohammed Askoul said Ismail Haniyeh will meet President Mohammed Morsi and senior Egyptian security officials. Haniyeh wants Egypt to open its border with Gaza. 
Hamas is an offshoot of Morsi’s region-wide Muslim Brotherhood movement.
Gazans hoping the Brotherhood will grant them freedom of movement after five years of confinement may be disappointed. Morsi’s powers are limited and he has more pressing issues at home to address. 
Hamas’ 2007 Gaza takeover prompted Egypt, like Israel, to seal Gaza’s borders. Although the border has been cracked open, many travel restrictions remain and there is no above-board trade.

Six arrested in London anti-terror operation

Five men and a woman suspected of terrorism offences have been arrested in London as part of an intelligence-led investigation involving MI5.

It is understood the arrests relate to a possible plot involving Islamist extremists, with potential UK targets.
One of those arrested in Newham is an ex-Police Community Support Officer.
Three of the men are brothers and a married couple have also been arrested.

This is from my hometown paper. Not exactly a bastion of conservative thought (although they do better than many) so I was pleasantly surprised to see this op-ed this morning.

Don Spatz: A day to cherish rights that are left

It's July Fourth, America's Independence Day, and it's time to take stock in just what a wonderful country we have, and the rights we Americans enjoy.

I'm so thankful for the right to life, liberty oh, wait, I'm 63 and by the time I'm 70 and may need a procedure to keep that life, the death panels in Obamacare (now Obamatax) will have ruled whether I live or die.

How about liberty, and pursuit of happiness? Oh, yes, so long as the pursuit doesn't involve making a lot of money and I'm considered a greedy 1 percenter.

OK, well, I've got the right to free speech oh, wait, unless it's speech that offends anyone for any reason at all and I'm charged with a hate crime.

By golly, at least I've got the right to the free exercise of my religion uh, unless that involves bringing my belief in a personal God into everyday decisions, since I'm supposed to leave him out of everything.

And if my beliefs mean I'm pro-life, then heaven help me - as if heaven would be allowed to.

OK, OK, but I can still count on a constitutional ban against unreasonable searches and seizures unless I'm walking in New York City where last year the cops seized and searched - the cops call it stopped and frisked - 685,724 people, with no warrants nor probable cause other than that those folks just didn't look right.

All right, let's at least celebrate my right not to have the government take my property without just compensation oops, that's unless I own some land with what I call a puddle and the government calls a wetlands, and it forbids me from using it for anything else, thereby "taking" my land for a government purpose but not compensating me.

Is it asking too much to be thankful for the right to bear arms? I guess it is if I'm in Chicago, whose gun ban was ruled unconstitutional but the city replaced it with bureaucratic red tape that's just as effective.

Whatever happened to the real Americans? To those who said "Give me liberty or give me death" and would have none of this government monkeying with citizens' rights?

Are they gone forever? Are we the frogs in the pot who don't realize what we've lost, and are about to lose?

As we celebrate this Independence Day, remember what independence is.

It's more than separation from the mother country.

It's separation from tyranny.

When in the Course of human events, it becomes necessary for one people to dissolve the political bands which have connected them with another, and to assume among the powers of the earth, the separate and equal station to which the Laws of Nature and of Nature's God entitle them, a decent respect to the opinions of mankind requires that they should declare the causes which impel them to the separation.

Dearborn Muslim charged with Nine Counts of attempted Murder (against Christians)Outside the Islamic Center of America

I heard about this when I was still in Michigan, but I didn't want to post anything until I had some documentation. I waited for the Detroit Free Press and other local media to report the story, but I gave up after more than a week of searching. Fortunately, Gadi Adelman (GA) interviewed Ruben Israel (RI) and posted the disturbing news over at Front Page Magazine.

On Sunday, June 17th, 2012, Ruben Israel's group of street preachers went to the Islamic Center of America (the same mosque I had visited two days earlier). While the group was preaching, a Muslim emerged from the mosque, got into his SUV, and tried to run them over. Mosque security naturally blamed the preachers for provoking him. 

Everyone should take note here. Ruben Israel's presence at the Dearborn Arab Festival was national news. The media jumped at the chance to show images of intolerant Christians harassing Muslims (check out Niraj Warikoo's coverage over at the Detroit Free Press). While I have no objections to calling attention to (and criticizing) the actions of Ruben Israel and his associates, we should all be horrified to realize that nine counts of attempted murder by a Muslim targeting Christians isn't even considered newsworthy by local media in Michigan. 

Here's an excerpt from Adelman's interview: 

GA: Now give me the exclusive; what happened on Sunday?

RI: We were at the Arab fest on Friday. On Sunday we went to the mosque in Dearborn.

GA: Were you on mosque property or out on the side walk?

RI: What mosque doesn’t have a sidewalk, but we stood by the street where the side walk would be. Of course the Dearborn Police showed up instantly. We were able to use our megaphone. We were able to fly our banners and there was no problem. The officers said everything was fine and we’re doing good. There were 2 squad cars and they flanked us just to make sure we were safe. Some of the Muslims came out and were screaming at us and we yelled back and forth and we did not go on their property, and according to police it was fine.

Unfortunately, one of the Muslims got in his SUV, drove up over the hill, accelerated and came right at us where we were standing. This guy came directly at us and we had to jump out of the way and he came screaming by us. Both of the police cars stopped him, pulled him out and cuffed him and he showed no remorse. The police actually have it on video because both police cars had there dash cameras on, so it’s not like it’s my word against his.

Then mosque security came out and said that they knew this guy and that we provoked him and the Dearborn Police officer yelled at the security guard and told him if he didn’t back off he would also be arrested for hindering a police investigation.

GA: Did the guy in the SUV pull over or was he forced to?

RI: They had to block him in. Once he was on the street they were headed his way and he was blocked in. They threw him against the car, cuffed him, frisked him, checked his car and again. It’s not like we can make this up. He is now officially charged with 9 counts of attempted murder.

GA: This never hit the news, not even in Dearborn?

RI: No, of course not, but if I had attempted to run down a Muslim that would be the head news on CNN, CBS, NBC, but when a Muslim wants to take out 9 Christians. We were the visiting team. This guy may walk; he has the potential to walk. At the very best they may take away his library card for a few weeks, but he’s out on bail. He’s out on high-dollar bail and from what I was told by the detective in charge, he does have a high-dollar attorney, so he’s not going to go down easy. He’s going to fight this thing.
Imagine if a Christian would have done this to a Muslim.....

Every MSM paper would have it as front page news! Obama: " “We will hold sacred the beliefs held sacred by others.”
