St John's Passion

Pt. 2

The Gospel According to St John

Chapter 18

The history of the passion of Christ.

[1] When Jesus had said these things, he went forth with his disciples over the brook Cedron, where there was a garden, into which he entered with his disciples. [2] And Judas also, who betrayed him, knew the place; because Jesus had often resorted thither together with his disciples. [3] Judas therefore having received a band of soldiers and servants from the chief priests and the Pharisees, cometh thither with lanterns and torches and weapons. [4] Jesus therefore, knowing all things that should come upon him, went forth, and said to them: Whom seek ye? [5] They answered him: Jesus of Nazareth. Jesus saith to them: I am he. And Judas also, who betrayed him, stood with them.

[6] As soon therefore as he had said to them: I am he; they went backward, and fell to the ground. [7] Again therefore he asked them: Whom seek ye? And they said, Jesus of Nazareth. [8] Jesus answered, I have told you that I am he. If therefore you seek me, let these go their way. [9] That the word might be fulfilled which he said: Of them whom thou hast given me, I have not lost any one. [10] Then Simon Peter, having a sword, drew it, and struck the servant of the high priest, and cut off his right ear. And the name of the servant was Malchus.

[11] Jesus therefore said to Peter: Put up thy sword into the scabbard. The chalice which my Father hath given me, shall I not drink it? [12] Then the band and the tribune, and the servants of the Jews, took Jesus, and bound him: [13] And they led him away to Annas first, for he was father in law to Caiphas, who was the high priest of that year. [14] Now Caiphas was he who had given the counsel to the Jews: That it was expedient that one man should die for the people. [15] And Simon Peter followed Jesus, and so did another disciple. And that disciple was known to the high priest, and went in with Jesus into the court of the high priest.

[16] But Peter stood at the door without. The other disciple therefore, who was known to the high priest, went out, and spoke to the portress, and brought in Peter. [17] The maid therefore that was portress, saith to Peter: Art not thou also one of this man's disciples? He saith: I am not. [18] Now the servants and ministers stood at a fire of coals, because it was cold, and warmed themselves. And with them was Peter also, standing, and warming himself. [19] The high priest therefore asked Jesus of his disciples, and of his doctrine. [20] Jesus answered him: I have spoken openly to the world: I have always taught in the synagogue, and in the temple, whither all the Jews resort; and in secret I have spoken nothing.

[21] Why asketh thou me? ask them who have heard what I have spoken unto them: behold they know what things I have said. [22] And when he had said these things, one of the servants standing by, gave Jesus a blow, saying: Answerest thou the high priest so? [23] Jesus answered him: If I have spoken evil, give testimony of the evil; but if well, why strikest thou me? [24] And Annas sent him bound to Caiphas the high priest. [25] And Simon Peter was standing, and warming himself. They said therefore to him: Art not thou also one of his disciples? He denied it, and said: I am not.

[26] One of the servants of the high priest (a kinsman to him whose ear Peter cut off) saith to him: Did I not see thee in the garden with him? [27] Again therefore Peter denied; and immediately the cock crew. [28] Then they led Jesus from Caiphas to the governor's hall. And it was morning; and they went not into the hall, that they might not be defiled, but that they might eat the pasch. [29] Pilate therefore went out to them, and said: What accusation bring you against this man? [30] They answered, and said to him: If he were not a malefactor, we would not have delivered him up to thee.

[31] Pilate therefore said to them: Take him you, and judge him according to your law. The Jews therefore said to him: It is not lawful for us to put any man to death; [32] That the word of Jesus might be fulfilled, which he said, signifying what death he should die. [33] Pilate therefore went into the hall again, and called Jesus, and said to him: Art thou the king of the Jews? [34] Jesus answered: Sayest thou this thing of thyself, or have others told it thee of me? [35] Pilate answered: Am I a Jew? Thy own nation, and the chief priests, have delivered thee up to me: what hast thou done?

[36] Jesus answered: My kingdom is not of this world. If my kingdom were of this world, my servants would certainly strive that I should not be delivered to the Jews: but now my kingdom is not from hence. [37] Pilate therefore said to him: Art thou a king then? Jesus answered: Thou sayest that I am a king. For this was I born, and for this came I into the world; that I should give testimony to the truth. Every one that is of the truth, heareth my voice. [38] Pilate saith to him: What is truth? And when he said this, he went out again to the Jews, and saith to them: I find no cause in him. [39] But you have a custom that I should release one unto you at the pasch: will you, therefore, that I release unto you the king of the Jews? [40] Then cried they all again, saying: Not this man, but Barabbas. Now Barabbas was a robber.

Chapter 19

The continuation of the history of the Passion of Christ.

[1] Then therefore, Pilate took Jesus, and scourged him. [2] And the soldiers platting a crown of thorns, put it upon his head; and they put on him a purple garment. [3] And they came to him, and said: Hail, king of the Jews; and they gave him blows. [4] Pilate therefore went forth again, and saith to them: Behold, I bring him forth unto you, that you may know that I find no cause in him. [5] (Jesus therefore came forth, bearing the crown of thorns and the purple garment.) And he saith to them: Behold the Man.

[6] When the chief priests, therefore, and the servants, had seen him, they cried out, saying: Crucify him, crucify him. Pilate saith to them: Take him you, and crucify him: for I find no cause in him. [7] The Jews answered him: We have a law; and according to the law he ought to die, because he made himself the Son of God. [8] When Pilate therefore had heard this saying, he feared the more. [9] And he entered into the hall again, and he said to Jesus: Whence art thou? But Jesus gave him no answer. [10] Pilate therefore saith to him: Speakest thou not to me? knowest thou not that I have power to crucify thee, and I have power to release thee?

[11] Jesus answered: Thou shouldst not have any power against me, unless it were given thee from above. Therefore, he that hath delivered me to thee, hath the greater sin. [12] And from henceforth Pilate sought to release him. But the Jews cried out, saying: If thou release this man, thou art not Caesar's friend. For whosoever maketh himself a king, speaketh against Caesar. [13] Now when Pilate had heard these words, he brought Jesus forth, and sat down in the judgment seat, in the place that is called Lithostrotos, and in Hebrew Gabbatha. [14] And it was the parasceve of the pasch, about the sixth hour, and he saith to the Jews: Behold your king. [15] But they cried out: Away with him; away with him; crucify him. Pilate saith to them: Shall I crucify your king? The chief priests answered: We have no king but Caesar.

[14] The parasceve of the pasch: That is, the day before the paschal sabbath. The eve of every sabbath was called the parasceve, or day of preparation. But this was the eve of a high sabbath, viz., that which fell in the paschal week.

[16] Then therefore he delivered him to them to be crucified. And they took Jesus, and led him forth. [17] And bearing his own cross, he went forth to that place which is called Calvary, but in Hebrew Golgotha. [18] Where they crucified him, and with him two others, one on each side, and Jesus in the midst. [19] And Pilate wrote a title also, and he put it upon the cross. And the writing was: JESUS OF NAZARETH, THE KING OF THE JEWS. [20] This title therefore many of the Jews did read: because the place where Jesus was crucified was nigh to the city: and it was written in Hebrew, in Greek, and in Latin.

[21] Then the chief priests of the Jews said to Pilate: Write not, The King of the Jews; but that he said, I am the King of the Jews. [22] Pilate answered: What I have written, I have written. [23] The soldiers therefore, when they had crucified him, took his garments, (and they made four parts, to every soldier a part,) and also his coat. Now the coat was without seam, woven from the top throughout. [24] They said then one to another: Let us not cut it, but let us cast lots for it, whose it shall be; that the scripture might be fulfilled, saying: They have parted my garments among them, and upon my vesture they have cast lots. And the soldiers indeed did these things. [25] Now there stood by the cross of Jesus, his mother, and his mother's sister, Mary of Cleophas, and Mary Magdalen.

[26] When Jesus therefore had seen his mother and the disciple standing whom he loved, he saith to his mother: Woman, behold thy son. [27] After that, he saith to the disciple: Behold thy mother. And from that hour, the disciple took her to his own. [28] Afterwards, Jesus knowing that all things were now accomplished, that the scripture might be fulfilled, said: I thirst. [29] Now there was a vessel set there full of vinegar. And they, putting a sponge full of vinegar and hyssop, put it to his mouth. [30] Jesus therefore, when he had taken the vinegar, said: It is consummated. And bowing his head, he gave up the ghost.

[31] Then the Jews, (because it was the parasceve,) that the bodies might not remain on the cross on the sabbath day, (for that was a great sabbath day,) besought Pilate that their legs might be broken, and that they might be taken away. [32] The soldiers therefore came; and they broke the legs of the first, and of the other that was crucified with him. [33] But after they were come to Jesus, when they saw that he was already dead, they did not break his legs. [34] But one of the soldiers with a spear opened his side, and immediately there came out blood and water. [35] And he that saw it, hath given testimony, and his testimony is true. And he knoweth that he saith true; that you also may believe.

[36] For these things were done, that the scripture might be fulfilled: You shall not break a bone of him. [37] And again another scripture saith: They shall look on him whom they pierced. [38] And after these things, Joseph of Arimathea (because he was a disciple of Jesus, but secretly for fear of the Jews) besought Pilate that he might take away the body of Jesus. And Pilate gave leave. He came therefore, and took the body of Jesus. [39] And Nicodemus also came, (he who at the first came to Jesus by night,) bringing a mixture of myrrh and aloes, about an hundred pound weight. [40] They took therefore the body of Jesus, and bound it in linen cloths, with the spices, as the manner of the Jews is to bury.

[41] Now there was in the place where he was crucified, a garden; and in the garden a new sepulchre, wherein no man yet had been laid. [42] There, therefore, because of the parasceve of the Jews, they laid Jesus, because the sepulchre was nigh at hand.

For the bulk of my comments on today's Bureau of Lies Damn Lies and Statistics March Unemployment report read this.

Because nothing has changed.

I said it then and many times before and since, as the 99ers expire their benefits in greater numbers and are no longer counted in the BLS unemployment roles THE UNEMPLOYMENT RATE WILL DROP. But that is not a good thing.

Because IF only 120,000 new jobs were added

AND the number of people not in the labor force is a record 87,897,000

THEN HOW can the unemployment rate fall from 8.3% to 8.2 %?

These are questions Americans should ask themselves but don't or won't.

And Barack Obama is counting on that willful ignorance to use in his re-election campaign.

Bush's Fault?

From Ace:
If the labor force participation rate, which measures the size of the workforce (including those looking for work) against the work-aged population, had remained constant with where it was on the day Obama was inaugurated, the U-3 rate would be 10.9%.

In other words, the only reason the rate is as low as 8.2% is that an extraordinary number of people have given up looking for work altogether.

"Obama’s Budget: ‘Interest Payments Will Exceed Defense Budget’ in 2019”

Two years ago in the blog (on a Movable Type server) I stated that the INTEREST on the debt would pay for 15 F-35 fighters a week. I thought I had to be wrong. But I was not. We could afford to make 2 MILLION Americans physicians EVERY YEAR (university, med school, internship, and residency WITH THE INTEREST (in which case Obamacare would be nearly a moot controversy). That is one of every 10 college students.
$10.6 Billion a week! At $35 million a copy, that’s 302 F-35’s a week. In 6 months we could replace the entire F-16 fleet, and end the program. 2 Nimitz class nuclear aircraft carriers A WEEK!
Half of all Medicare Expenditures!
The bigger the government which CREATES NOTHING gets, the worse this is going to be.

KSM should only be tried by an American military court

The inherently stupid leftist Andrew Belonsky has been going the subtle route again, suggesting that the plotters of 9-11 be tried by an international court. He says:
As military officials prepare for what will be a defining case, it’s worth again asking if this is the appropriate setting for such proceedings. A civilian court, many agreed, would be too insecure for the high profile case, and the legal parameters perhaps not equipped for the task. But is a military venue run by a specific government’s armed services the best option?
As it so happens, yes, a military court is the best place to put a monster like Khalid Sheikh Mohammed. If anything, it's because an international court, depending on what we consider one, cannot be expected to offer a reliable ruling or to give Mohammed the damnation to hell he's asking for. The UN definitely wouldn't, and the Hague, quite honestly, isn't much better. The American military court system would be the best place to try a terrorist.

That aside, why does Belonsky ambiguously allude to the US and its armed forces? Is he suggesting that the army doesn't know what it's doing?

It's very good that a wise decision was made and that KSM will be tried by US military courts, because that's where enemies of his standing deserve to be tried, and the sooner Mohammed is sent to the chair for the horror he caused, the better.

Brooklyn: *Bus On Fire* Box #2748. 7 Ave & 92 St. U/D; units repotring a MTA bus exploded involving 6 cars. NY01

Here’s a photo from Twitter

A bus and six cars were torched in the blaze.
The New York Daily News reported:
A twin-size mattress that ended up under an MTA bus is being blamed for sparking a bizarre Thursday night Brooklyn blaze that left the bus and six parked cars torched.
The S53 bus from Staten Island ran over the mattress just after 11 p.m. and dragged it across the Verrazano Bridge, a police source said.
Metal springs in the mattress apparently punctured the bus’ gas tank, setting the coach ablaze moments after the driver pulled over in Bay Ridge and evacuated passengers.
Witnesses said gas from the bus spilled into the gutter on Dahlgren Place near 92nd St., triggering a fiery stream underneath a half-dozen cars that rapidly went up in flames.
No one was injured.

You know you're pretty much fucked when you finally get in to the interview (they were running an hour and a half behind) and the first thing the interviewer says to you after you sit down is "You're kinda high on the food chain for this job, aren't you?"

It went south from there. The whole thing lasted 10 minutes (there were folks lower on the food chain stacking up waiting to be interviewed). A beautiful waste of a half day.

update: no kidding, I just got an email from a woman from this same recruiter's office wanting to interview me for the very same job.

Let This Be a Lesson To You When People From The Middle East Tell You Things Are Getting Better

Even the pro-Freedom Egyptian Blogger, Egyptian Sandmonkey, now admits the Egyptian Spring was a failure.

From Atlas:

Sandmonkey: "We Majorly Failed"

I disagreed with the popular and initially pro-freedom Egyptian blogger Sandmonkey back in the beginning of 2011, and had a public falling out with him over my insistence that the Muslim Brotherhood was very much a major player in the overthrow of Mubarak and whatever freedom Egyptians had enjoyed under his government. It wasn't pretty. I expressed my distress here. He hurled.

But now Sandmonkey is tacitly admitting that I was right all along. His attack on me is now nowhere to be found on the interwebs. And now he is conceding that the position I took was right all along, and that the "Arab Spring" in Egypt was not a secular democracy movement, but a push toward Sharia:

"We majorly failed," concedes Mahmoud Salem, a popular pro-democracy activist and blogger who tweets as "Sandmonkey." "The secular revolutionaries and leftists didn't focus on moving beyond Tahrir and engaging the streets, listening to the demands of the people. So right now, we have to reassess and plan before we move forward."

Go read the whole thing.

Reassess? Yeah, good luck with that.

You squandered the opportunity of a life time.

Frankly, FUCK YOU!

Fuck you for lying to yourself and the world, when it was most critical that you be honest.

(Not that anyone on this blog bought his bullshit, even for a second.)

Fucking Stockholm captive, jizya-slurping Dhimmi.

Another Cassandra moment for this blog - FT: ‘the Muslim Brotherhood cannot be trusted’

There has NEVER been any doubt about the mission of the Hassan Al Banna, and Sayd Qutb’s Muslim Brotherhood and its branches (such as HAMAS) and philosophical descendants, and friends in KSA, Yemen, Afghanistan, Pakistan, the Maghreb, etc.
They all know in their gut it is their personal responsibility to ensure the growth and dominion of what pleases god, and what pleases god is for Islam to be the supreme agent of that dominion on earth.
The Ikwhan has no choice. It is only submitting to god’s will.
This, so sorry, means that one way or the other, the fornicating, drinking, arrogance of a west which blasphemes and seizes god’s authority by making up laws out of their own heads rather than submit to god’s must go. It also means that those people cursed by god, the Yahudis, have a worse fate in store.
That is how it is. They don’t see this as them being the bad guys. They have a different set of criteria to decide what tactics are compulsory, and what the end game should be like.

Brotherhood takes on Egypt’s military

You can forgive Egyptians for concluding that the Muslim Brotherhood cannot be trusted.
After claiming that it is not trying to control parliament, that it favours consensus over monopoly and that it would not field a candidate in the presidential elections, Egypt’s most powerful political movement has broken all its promises.
Scepticism about its intentions was already rife last week after the Brotherhood packed the elected panel charged with drafting the post-revolution constitution with devotees. The move provoked a walkout from the panel by representatives of liberal parties, the constitutional court, the Coptic Church, and even al-Azhar, the centre of Sunni religious authority.
Then the Brotherhood dropped a bombshell at the weekend with a decision to nominate Khairat al-Shater, its strategist and most formidable leader, as its candidate in the May 23 presidential election.
The movement’s brazen push for power is a dramatic departure from its decades-old approach of cautious, gradual politics and its more recent preference for sharing in the responsibility of ruling Egypt’s 80m people.
The truly astounding arrogance the Financial Times has in assigning motives to the MB, likes ours, just because a vote has taken place causes one to ask, ‘what’s it going to take to convince you?’
What they want is not what the Republicans, Democrats or Tories want.
Political power is a tool to sanctify and glorify god through Islam. That’s all it is. Any action, plan, or tactic which results in that is a good. And the majority of people in the Middle East and many other places especially where Islam dominate demographically FEEL THE SAME WAY.
Place this thesis over the past and future actions of the MB and see how it fits.
On the day that the Peace Treaty with Israel’s abrogation will not threaten that tool, it goes. And the VAST majority of the people will be glad. This is the truth.

First he tells us his son would look like Trayvon. Then he tells the Supreme Court how to rule on Constitutionality. Now he tells reporters how to report what he says.

All in all a really big week for the President.

"This bears on your reporting," President Obama said to journalists. "I think that there is oftentimes the impulse to suggest that if the two parties are disagreeing then they're equally at fault and the truth lies somewhere in the middle. And an equivalence is presented which I think reinforces peoples' cynicism about Washington in general. This is not one of those situations where there's an equivalency."

"As all of you are doing your reporting, I think it's important to remember that the positions that I am taking now on the budget and a host of other issues. if we had been having this discussion 20 years ago or even 15 years ago … would've been considered squarely centrist positions," Obama said a few moments later.

The Obama Jobs Gap is up to 15 million missing jobs

From American.com:

A much-needed reminder that despite the recent upturn in the jobs market, there is still an awfully big employment hole to fill, as JPMorgan economist James Glassman points out:
A useful way to assess the challenge for the US economy is to ask, How many jobs would need to be created to recover the ground lost in this last recession. Focusing only on official unemployment, currently 12,806,000 million are classified as officially unemployed. In a normal, fully-employed economy, the unemployment rate would be expected to be 4.5 to 5.0 percent. In that case, the natural number of unemployed people would be 7 to 8 million, respectively. So, for the unemployment rate to fall from 8.3 percent to 4.5 to 5.0 percent, the economy would need employ 6 million to 5 million people, respectively, of those who currently are unemployed.
What about the larger picture that includes the hidden unemployed? How many jobs are needed to restore the ratio of employed people to the total population back to where it was in 2007, prior to the economic downturn. Under normal circumstances, there would be 153,000,000 jobs, including parttime jobs that people hold voluntarily. Currently, however, the number of full-time jobs and those who are holding part-time jobs voluntarily stand at 138,189,000.
In other words, to restore the job market to the state it was in back in 2007, before the recession, would require the creation of 14.8 million jobs in today’s terms, a daunting task to say the least.

When Conservatives aren’t and Liberals are illiberal what’s left? A vicious ‘center’ growing?

Some have called it polarization, under a view that this is new. It is not new, and we had a good view of factionalism and its results from about 1836-1860.
Barry Goldwater, whose principled but damaging opposition to the civil rights act of 1964 actually set the criterion for claimed conservative, but in objective terms actually NON CONSERVATIVE, so called ‘social value’ republicanism.
“I am a conservative Republican, but I believe in democracy and the separation of church and state.  The conservative movement is founded on the simple tenet that people have the right to live life as they please as long as they don’t hurt anyone else in the process.”
“I don’t have any respect for the Religious Right.”
“Every good Christian should line up and kick Jerry Falwell’s ass.”
In case you are wondering about the context of the last quote…
When Sandra Day O’Connor was nominated to the Supreme Court in 1981, some Religious Right leaders suspected she might be too moderate on abortion and other social concerns.  Moral Majority founder Jerry Falwell told the news media that “every good Christian should be concerned.”  Replied Goldwater, “Every good Christian should line up and kick Jerry Falwell’s ass.”
Likewise through the looking glass…. a claimed member of Ted Kennedy’s staff once told me that “Lieberman is a spineless war criminal”. What would that make Hubert Humphrey? Or Henry Jackson?
OR FDR, who btw is in writing citing that public workers, those who work for any govt, have no right to unions/striking since theirs is a special employment and undertaking.
What is a LIBERAL?
He is a man who ran for Congress in 1940, joined the army as soon as we were attacked, and returned to serve in Congress only when FDR demanded Congressmen serve where they were elected or resign. He visited Buchenwald a few days after it was liberated. He supported nuclear deterrence so strongly that in 1958 faced a primary challenge from the left as a democrat. He has THE strongest record of support for civil rights, and the legislation it spawned both in 1957 and 1964. In 1974, he sponsored the Jackson-Vanik amendment in the Senate (with Charles Vanik sponsoring it in the House) which denied normal trade relations to certain countries with non-market economies that restricted the freedom of emigration. I think we could objectively say based on Apple that would make it CHINA. But that would be INCONVENIENT.
Today these values are derided as neoconservative fascism by those who name themselves liberal, much as Goldwater is derided as some kind of elder warped crank for opposing those who name themselves ‘conservative’ but supported the government intervening to claim ownership of the individual named Terry Schiavo. Hello Mr. Santorum, Mr. Dobson.
There is little room for conservatives who deride the values and effects of propounding legislative action based on faith.
There is NO ROOM AT ALL on the other side for those who will not hew directly to the line of so called liberals, but whose intolerant progressivism is so illiberal that the man with the 3rd most liberal domestic voting record in the senate cannot be a liberal democrat.
I am not one who believes that compromise must be an end in itself, thus my thoughts on debt and spending. Which is to say, what might be considered a fair compromise will not solve the problem. However, it is the spirit of compromise, achievable in most efforts, which defines the principle behind those moments when one side says on THIS issue we cannot achieve it.
It is that spirit which is completely missing today and results in the departure of people such as Ben Nelson and Olympia Snowe.
We are in real trouble when each side regards the actions of the other wondering if it is just some stratagem in a process which is evil.
