Elitism, Europhilia, and Roman Polanski

From Rob Taylor at Red Alerts:

The basic theme of Bram Stoker’s Dracula was the nightmare of a modern virtuous society invaded and corrupted by decadent “Old Europe” style nobility, who act in ways that defy morality and flaunt the laws of society due to their belief that they themselves are beyond the reach of man’s justice. Stoker wrote Dracula at a time when England was surpassing Europe as the cultural center of the West, and his novel was a reaction to the antinomian and often blasphemously obscene art and literature of men likeHuysmans or Baudelaire. Dracula in Stoker’s work represents not only the dark antiquity of Europe, where men of low character could, by nature of their birth into noble households, literally get away with rape and murder, but the fin de siècle movement’s seeming embrace of that sort of depravity and decadence.

Dracula, the noble who defied even death (and thus God in Stoker’s universe), took what and more importantly who he wanted without regard to common decency. He murdered, raped, and stole his way through the story, acting as the ultimate metaphor for the evil of Old Europe’s degeneracy for decades. Then something peculiar happened. Post-modern society began seeing Dracula not as a metaphor for the sexual predator protected by his wealth and power, but as an anti-hero rebelling against Victorian morality. There is no Humanities or Literature department, book publishing house or film studio where this is not the prevailing interpretation of the Dracula character. Perhaps those that see themselves as the cultural “tastemakers” of our society, the university professors, leftist “artists,” and the business interests that surround the arts, have vested interests in reigniting the noble-worship of Old Europe, in creating a society that believes in the noble’s exception including their privilege to assault and otherwise molest non-nobles. But anyone having been exposed to some published poet or author (and I’ve meet far too many) knows that this reimagining of Dracula, and vampirism in general, is simply another expression of these people’s misanthropic elitism.

A common expression of this elitism is also academic Europhilia, by which I mean the adoption (primarily by the left) of what they assume are prevailing opinions in Europe and the pretense of a disdain for America. Those of us on the right are mistaken to think the modern academic’s tendency to scoff at “dead White males” and their contributions to civilization as in some way Europhobic. To the contrary, academics have merely adopted two of Europe’s most pernicious and degrading philosophies outside of the idea of the hereditary divine right: Marxism and multiculturalism. So entranced by Europe’s ability to project the air of cultural superiority, the self-appointed elites here have entered vassalage with the new “nobility” of Europe.

Which brings us to Roman Polanski, hackneyed artist, peripheral character in the Manson murders, and violent rapist of children. Roman Polanski drugged and violently raped, both vaginally and anally, a 13-year-old girl. He then skipped bail and fled to Europe where the arts community there, with the open approval of the “tastemakers” here, helped the degenerate continue to work and prosper while avoiding justice. His recent arrest exposed how the people who consider themselves part of the most sophisticated sectors of American society are little more than living caricatures of the gypsies who followed Dracula, doing his bidding and aiding him in his most heinous crimes.

This is an excellent analysis. Go read the whole thing.

Wouldn't be a hoot if Polanski got Charles Manson as a cell mate? Oh, the conversations they could have...
Maybe in an alternative reality.

I never really liked this guy since it was revealled he was fiddling about with Nastassja Kinski when she was only 15

I was never aware until recently about the rape

It is disgusting that so many people through out the years could work and praise this dirty bastard.

I can tell you from personal experience in the Entertainment industry that it is a known fact that some are Pedophiles. It is spoken about openly. "Oh yeah, he likes young boys." "I would have to help him get young boys", etc.

But, of course, for me to write who it is I have heard this about would be hearsay, since I have only heard about it through third parties, and I could not be sure they were telling the truth.

This stuff is acknowledged and even encouraged in the Entertainment industry.

Oh hell, Jaco -- does this mean we have to take Vlad off the masthead?

This is sort of Michael Jackson deja vu all over again. Is it possible to enjoy Jackson's work without thinking about what the little freak was up to? Polanski doesn't even try to deny it. He appears to treat victims of child rape compassionately in "Chinatown" -- then goes and does it himself and shows no remorse afterwards. He is like John Huston's character in that movie who says that under the right conditions anyone is capable of anything.

Ironically, there is a vampire character in a musical based on one of Polanski's movies who expresses pain and remorse over what he's driven to do. The damned vampire has more class than Polanski -- who, no surprise, had nothing to do with writing the music.

Manson and Polanski as cellmates? Now there's a little piece of hell on earth. Charlie could gleefully explain Roman to himself until his head explodes.

Revere Rides Again,

Neither of us like Micheal Jackson. I used to before, little Billy, but after that, his actions discussed me. I might have been convinced of his innocents if he had not acted the way he did.

He was either a pedophile, stupid, or a stupid pedophile. I know the court failed to convict him, but even if he didn't commit child rape, he acted like someone who would.

However, I remember hearing something on Fox News the other day that made it sound like they now think that his death may have involved foul play. Two wrongs don't make a right, so if anyone did something to cause his death, than I hope he's arrested soon.

As for Polanski, I don't think I saw any of his films either, but now that I know what he did, I don't think I want to.

What happened with Jackson sounds more like manslaughter in the sense that his doctor gave him medication he should have known would kill him. Jackson insisted, but I don't think a doctor can duck a malpractice charge just because the patient insisted on treatment that was wrong for him.

I suspect he got off the child rape rap through threats, blackmail, his own celebrity, favorable racism in the jury, and perhaps sleazy parents willing to let their children's molester go free in exchange for money. Not the first time I've seen it but it's always disgusting.

I have to keep reminding myself that Polanski is primarily a director, not usually a screenwriter or author. He's competent (did a damn good Macbeth) but his films, including "Chinatown", "Rosemary's Baby", and "Tess" tend to be dark and morbid and there is a running theme of the exploitation of innocent women in them (including the 3 above). From what I've read the past couple of days, Polanski used his Holocaust traumas(mother died in Auschwitz) and his wife's murder as excuses to just give up on morality and indulge his "sense of the absurd". Other people have risen above tragedy but he seems to have gone the hedonist/nihilist coward's route. He may be about to learn that this choice does not work out well in the long run.

Polanski also made The Pianist and Ninth Gate which are supposed to be great movies.

Oscar Wilde was a great writer, and he was a pedophile. Ginsberg was a member of the North American Man/Boy Love Association, so I believe that probably makes him a pedophile. I believe his friends William Burroughs and Paul Bowles were also very likely pedophiles.

I believe Thomas Mann, the author was a pedophile.

I don't know that much about the lives of composers, but I can tell you that I knew of musicians who were apparently pedophiles and they created great music.

Was OJ Simpson's football career any less amazing because he nearly decapitated his wife?

It seems to me you gotta be able to separate it out.

That being said, pedophiles belong in jail.

Damien said...

Pastorius,

pedophiles belong in jail, and so do murderers and any one else who commits a whole host of crimes.

Pasolini, one of my favorite directors, was a pedophile. He wrote a book of poetry in Roman dialect (one of many books in many dialects) called "Ragazzi di vita," about male child prostitutes in Rome. He was murdered by one of those prostitutes in a public restroom.

'Mamma Roma' is still one of my favorite movies. I love so many of his movies, but he was a pedophile. He was brilliant. He wrote "La dolce vita."

This is pseudo-intellectual hogwash of the lowest order.

As for the facts, Polanski did NOT "rape that girl violently". Read the notes of her evidence at "Smoking Gun". If he had REALLY raped her, they would have had him by the balls for rape and not for "statutory rape". As it was, the girl complied. She had sex before and a previous "photo op" where Polanski made her pose topless as well, so she must have known to what he was up and STILL went with him again. Obviously the court saw it like that or -- again -- they would have gotten him for rape.

That said, a man who has sex with a girl of 13 and knows, as Polanski did, about her age, ought never to leave his prison cell again or at least not entire.

What to make of a mother who lets her 13-year-old daughter go on a hop with such a DOM I better don't say here. If I see those two attention whores now posing together I am rummaging for my pukebag. And it is, by the way, only too American, as is the entire tawdry "I forgive him" thing, which brings me back to the author of that shit: It is typical and quite telling that somebody who is so dismissive of European culture should indulge such lies when it comes to the Polanski case because they back up his warped view.

The_Editrix said...

P.S. I fail to see what Polanski's work has to do with all this. A pedophile is a pedophile is a pedophile.

Damien said...

The_Editrix,

Really,

Where does the Smoking Gun, say that Polanski did NOT "rape that girl violently?"

Rob Taylor said...

Reading may not be your strong point "Editrix" as it is clearly stated in the court transcripts that Polanski plead out to a lesser charge of statutory rape as part of a deal so he wouldn't get hit with the rape charges. It's fairly common to offer criminals a deal to plead to a lesser charge and do less time than they deserve because it saves the court expense of a trial and ensures the victim doesn't have to go through the trauma of testifying.

But then again maybe you do know that, and are just dishonestly misrepresenting the facts of the case just as you misrepresented my post.

European nations harbored the man for over thirty years, until finally Switzerland extradited him this past week.

Not only did European nations harbor him, but they celebrated him for his work, and ignored his crime.

Hollywood and the Mainstream American media have done the same.

When you say this 13 year old girl was not raped, I have to question your knowledge of drugs.

Do you know what Quaaludes are?

And also, I have to say this (sadly), have you ever had children of your own? If so, would you want this to happen to your child?

Also, if you read the transcripts, while she may have "consented" (once again, under the influence of Quaaludes which you seem to know nothing about), but she did not consent to anal sex.

There is no use in defending Ronan Polanski, and it is almost impossible to defend Europe from charges that it is complicit in adult/child-sex, and even encouraging of it.

... from the 2005 autobiography of Minister of Culture Frédéric Mitterand, openly homosexual, who was one of the first to rush to Polanski's defense. Here, the future minister is talking about the terrestrial pleasures of a foreign country - possibly Thailand:

"I had to become used to paying for the boys (...) Obviously I had read what they were saying about the boy business here (...) I know what truth there is in it. The widespread poverty, pimps everywhere, the mountains of dollars it brings in while the boys only get a few crumbs, the drugs that destroy, the illnesses, the sordid details of all this traffic. But all of that did not prevent me from returning there. All the rituals of a market for young boys, of the commerce of slaves, excite me enormously (...)

You cannot judge such a sight as anything but abominable from the moral point of view, but it gives me pleasure beyond the point of reason (...) The profusion of very attractive and readily available young boys puts me in a state of desire that I do not have to restrain or hide. Money and sex - I'm right in the heart of my system, the system that finally functions because I know that I will not be refused."

There have been more. I saw one which debuted in 1989. It came highly recommended by cinema critics in the U.S. I took a date to see the movie at an art-house theater, not knowing what the movie was truly about. Needless to say, I never had another date with that woman.

Victim's testimony:

http://blogs.timeslive.co.za/minor/2009/10/01/transcript-from-polanski-trial-should-he-be-sentenced/

The victim testified that after she left the whirlpool bath, Polanski told her to go into a nearby bedroom and lie down.

A: I was going, ‘No, I think I better go home,’ because I was afraid. So I just went and I sat down on the couch.

Q: What were you afraid of?

A: Him.

(a few minutes later)

A: He sat down beside me and asked me if I was OK.

Q: What did you say, if anything?

A: I said, ‘No.’

Q: What did he say?

A: He goes, ‘Well, you’ll be better.’ And I go, ‘No, I won’t. I have to go home.’

Q: What happened then?

A: He reached over and he kissed me. And I was telling him, ‘No,’ you know, ‘Keep away.’

___

After Polanski kissed her, the victim alleged, he began to engage in oral sex.

A: … I was ready to cry. I was kind of — I was going, ‘No. Come on. Stop it.’ But I was afraid.

Q: And what did he say, if anything?

A: He wasn’t saying anything that I can remember. He was — sometimes he was saying stuff, but I was just blocking him out, you know.

___

The victim testified that Polanski began having sex with her, but sodomized her when he learned she wasn’t using birth control.

A: He asked, he goes, ‘Are you on the pill?’ And I went, ‘No.’ And he goes, ‘When did you last have your period?’ And I said, I don’t know. A week or two. I’m not sure.’

Q: And what did he say?

A: He goes, ‘Come on. You have to remember.’ And I told him I didn’t.

Q: Did he say anything after that?

A: Yes. He goes, ‘Would you want me to go through your back? And I went, ‘No.’
