Back when the WTC was being planned there were objections to the height of the buildings because it was feared an aircraft might fly into one by accident.

Nobody mentioned what should have been the obvious...

Considering the PLO was hijacking planes in the 70's, yeah, I guess it should have been obvious.

But, by then, the WTC were completed, or almost so.

Pastorius,

also no one had flown a jumbo jet into a building on purpose before 9/11.

True.

And, I'm not sure when suicide attacks began.

Damien said...

Pastorius,

maybe you could look that up.

That form of hijacking was entirely new. That's one reason the first planes were able to get away with it. Everyone was working on the model, you get hijacked you fly to Cuba or someplace, sit on the tarmac for a while until they work something out, then you go home. Nobody really caught on until United 175 hit the south tower.

revereridesagain,

You know, back then, before 9/11, I remember, they used to teach that people in hostage situations on air plans, they shouldn't fight back, and should just go along since they would be more likely to survive if they didn't resist. Those naive days where people didn't religious nut jobs would fly jets loaded with innocent people into buildings are gone for good.
