U.S. subsidizing repression of Palestinian dissidents
Gertz:Last week, Bush administration officials pledged to Congress that U.S. aid to the Palestinian Authority would not help terrorists in attacks against Israel. Well, the officials were right. The problem is that U.S. aid is being used by the PA to terrorize its own population.
On May 26, the PA Preventive Security Apparatus, under the direct control of PA Chairman Mahmoud Abbas, announced that it had arrested numerous Palestinians.
Their crime: collaboration with Israel.
Don't be fooled by the charge.
The PA has often used the term "collaboration" when it arrests dissidents, reformists and ordinary people who happened to cross a Fatah thug.
PSA said this group of collaborators, equipped with computers for communications, were recruiting Palestinian youngsters to impede the Palestinian uprising against Israel.
In other words, Abbas, who the administration insists has been preaching peace, arrests Palestinians when they actually work for peace.
